Polyethylene fibre

Polyethylene (PE for short) belongs to the polyolefin family and, together with polypropylene, is the most widely produced plastic in the world. It owes this primarily to its flexible area of application, the low-priced raw materials and its good processability. A distinction is made between LDPE (low-density polyethylene) and HDPE (high-density polyethylene) that depends on the manufacturing process and composition. The significantly stronger HDPE that we carry in our product range is mainly used in plastic components whereas LDPE is mainly used in films and packaging.

Together with the easy handling and low density, the good strength values also make PE a very attractive starting material for fibre production.

Pros and cons

Advantages

  • High strength
  • Low density (specific weight)
  • Hydrophobic and therefore very resistant to mould
  • Hydrophilic finish enables dispersibility in water

Polyethylene fibre
Manufacturing process

Polyethylene is now mostly produced by means of organometallic catalysed polymerisation. If ethylene alone is used in the synthesis, the stronger HDPE (high density polyethylene) is obtained. If butene, hexene or octene are introduced through co-polymerisation, the significantly softer LLDPE (linear-low-density polyethylene) is produced. An older process for producing PE is high-pressure gas-phase polymerisation. Unlike catalysed polymerisation, this does not produce straight chains, but rather branched polymers. Since these are less able to crystallise together, this technique results in the softer LDPE (low-density polyethylene).
